What is a full-mouth restoration?
Full-mouth restoration or reconstruction involves all of the teeth and soft tissues. The goal is to replace missing teeth, repair damaged teeth, correct improperly aligned jaw joints and bites, reverse gum disease, rebuild lost jawbone mass, and replace worn out dental appliances. At South Riding Smiles our five dentists have extensive expertise in all facets of restorative dentistry enabling us to perform most of what may be needed. But, if there are areas where we need outside assistance, we may enlist the work of a periodontist or oral surgeon, for example.
While this treatment approach addresses your unique needs and goals, it commonly involves:
- Orthodontic treatment to correct a misaligned bite
- TMJ treatment to ensure optimal position of the jaw joints
- Crowns and bridges to replace old or damaged dental work and restorations
- Dental implants to replace missing teeth
- Dental bonding to conceal damaged or broken teeth
Depending on your unique situation and personal goals, our dentists may recommend other cosmetic dentistry procedures involved in a smile makeover.
Who is a candidate for full-mouth restoration?
Full-mouth restorations can cover the gamut of dental procedures, everything from changing the alignment of your bite to addressing gum disease. There isn’t a single sign that you need full-mouth restoration with our team. If these symptoms sound like the condition of your oral health, full-mouth restoration could be the answer:
- Several teeth with decay
- Loose or missing teeth
- Short, worn down teeth
- Broken teeth
- Chipped teeth

How long does a full-mouth restoration take to complete?
The time it takes our team at South Riding Smiles to fully remake your oral health varies by the patient. These are completely customized combinations of treatments. For instance, placing dental implants takes up to six months, as the jawbone needs to fully grow around the implant base before the post and artificial tooth can be attached. Treating gum disease can take a couple months to fully remove diseased tissue and reverse the infection. Other procedures, such as placing porcelain veneers, take just a couple appointments. Bonding and teeth whitening only take an hour or two.
Once our dentists get a better idea of your situation and your needs to restore your oral health, we can give you an idea of your timeframe.
Benefits Of Full Mouth Restoration
- Relief from painful TMJ symptoms
- Improved bite function, allowing you to enjoy all the foods you love without difficulty
- Reduced risk of general health problems related to poor oral health, such as heart disease, diabetes and chronic headaches

What’s The Difference Between Full-Mouth Restoration and A Smile Makeover?
The difference is the need for the procedures and the goals. Smile makeovers are elective procedures where the goal is to aesthetically improve the smile through the use of porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, and the like.
Full-mouth reconstruction is necessary to basically save the patient’s teeth and overall oral health.
Of course, there is overlap between some of the treatments. For instance, porcelain veneers or dental bonding are parts of both a restoration and a smile makeover. It’s really the need that is the difference.
How Much Does A Full Mouth Restoration Cost?
Since full mouth restoration is a customized combination of dental procedures designed specifically for your unique needs, there is no set cost for the treatment. During your consultation with one of our experienced and knowledgeable dentists, your goals will be discussed and a treatment plan will be designed to address your situation. At this time, each procedure involved in your treatment plan will be explained and a cost estimate will be provided to you so you can make an informed decision.
Ultimately, this is your dental care and your decision. We proudly offer a number of payment and financing options to help ensure you get the care you need.
Is A Full-Mouth Restoration Painful?
At South Riding Smiles, we strive to make every procedure as comfortable as possible. Modern anesthesia and techniques make most procedures very comfortable. There may be some pain during recovery, but we help you manage that. And if you’re apprehensive about any treatments, we offer sedation to help you overcome those fears.
What Are The Risks Involved With A Full-Mouth Restoration?
There isn’t much risk with these procedures. As with any dental procedure where extractions and gum tissue treatment are involved, there is a risk of infection, but our expertise keeps this risk to a minimum.
The real risk is not having these procedures. If your oral health is such that you are even considering a full-mouth restoration, you’re headed down the path to complete tooth loss, gum disease, and deteriorating jaw bone mass. That’s not a way to go through life when you can have a great new smile with our restorations.
Will I Have Food Restrictions After My Full-Mouth Restoration Is Complete?
You won’t have any restrictions on what you can or cannot eat. However, if you’ve had a dental bridge placed, it’s not a bad idea to avoid overly chewy, very hard, or sticky foods, at least when chewing on the side with your bridge. That’s because you can break your new appliance.
Part of the real value in having a full-mouth restoration is your ability to again enjoy many foods you’ve had to take out of your diet. Fruits and vegetables that were too difficult to chew with your damaged teeth can now be enjoyed again. Plus, that enables you to have better nutrition.
